Well, since the name of this site is dedicated to the eradication of one man's employment - and since subject man just had the best year of his career in said employment - I think it's time we here at FBS addressed something.
For us, it's very simple really.
And that's unfortunate for him.
You see, with the talent we've had on offense, we expected outputs like this year, EVERY year. Not 5 years in. Not 6, not 7, not 8..... It's not like Bryan was brought in from a career in real estate or chimney sweeping and asked to take on the task of coordinating an offense in major college football. He has been at VT longer than that, and (gasp), worked on the offensive side of the ball before being given the reigns to the offense. So his learning curve should have been.....at least fast enough to know to run the ball on 3rd down with less than 2 minutes left against Boise State when they're out of timeouts and we're up by 4 points......
So, 9 years later the man has a career year and we're all supposed to just forget about the last near-decade of futility? Just the same that Bryan-hater-haters tell us that we can't write up hatemail and call for a firing after one horrible game, or one horrible season (after another) - we get to throw that right back at you now. One good game and one good season doesn't mean we still don't think he should be replaced.
[insert actual VT fandom thought here: since we all know with Frank's dedication to his step-son, and Frank's love affair with certain phrases: "coached 'em up good", "coaching consistency", and "10 wins per season" come to mind.....we all know Bryan will be our OC next year. Unless dear God, he got a HC gig somewhere. Louisiana Lafeyette, cough. Pray. Sorry, I digress. Since we all know that Bryan will be back and be our OC next year. Let me state it now that we here at FBS are truly VT fans and alumni, and we hope to close this blog for good solid football reasons one day, and since we all admit he'll be back next year.....let's hope and pray that the (END of the) 2010 season is a sign of things to come and maybe someone who took 9 years to turn the corner. 6 years longer than he would have had at any other university, but hey. We're kinda slow in the Fancy Gap Mountain region, y'all.]
[insert obligatory VT fandom thought, part deux: we love Frank here. Frank is awesome. We think 9 years is too long. But hey, no one saw 11-2 this year after our start. Dammit man, Frank earned another pass for his nephew/son/took-a-rib-out-and-made-a-Bryan.]
So, our standard mantra remains: Bryan shouldn't be removed from the VT staff entirely. I feel like I caveat my writings here ad nauseum, but he is apparently a helluva guy, a helluva hugger, a helluva practice coach, a helluva recruiter, etc. - he just can't (or couldn't?) put a gameplan together and run an offense during a game. Or even simpler, as proven by his son's Madden expertise rising to the top this season, he couldn't put good playcalls in to take advantage of our offensive weapons DURING a game. Soooooo, keep him on staff, move him back to OL and TE coach, make him lead recruiter. Make him head of hugging. Whatever, keep him around because he clearly offers something to the team. Even if sometimes some of us feel what he offers is his silence and non-release of disturbingly embarrassing photos of Frank in a compromising position. Hire Kevin Rogers back to be our OC. He's probably gone from the Vikings anyways with Childress out and Favre retiring (maybe? again?).
Let's give credit where credit is due. Earlier I said, "career year", for him. Seriously:
19th in scoring offense in the nation. 35.5 points per game.
38th in total offense in the nation. 411.1 yards per game.
1st in the nation in turnover margin. Only 12 turnovers lost all year. That's 4th in the nation by itself.
28th in the nation in 3rd down efficiency. 45.18% 3rd down conversions.
10th in the nation in red zone efficiency. Scoring 90% of the time.
(35th in the nation in red zone touchdown efficiency. Scoring TD's 65% of the time.)
And 19th in the nation in time of possession. At almost 32 minutes per game TOP.
These all are great, for him, for us, for VT. Great. We expect this. We want to be a top tier team, year in, year out. We want to be this good, EVERY year.
BUT.....I also said earlier that it's "simple" and it's "unfortunate for him".
You see, this season, we fielded probably our best offense of all time, player wise. We are loaded on offense, LOADED. And, rightly so, T-Mobile is starting to get recognized as the amazing player and quarterback that he is. He broke just about every available VT offensive record, and started getting deservedly compared to the original great one, MV7. Our stable of RB's goes without saying. Perhaps even having 3 guys who will eventually play on Sundays. Our WR's are great, with a future NFL'er in JB81 - and with the right agent and combine scores, perhaps a Welker type who could catch on somewhere in DC19. And because of his size and blocking ability, and now finally getting to show off his hands, also possibly a Sunday player in AS88. I won't even mention the hogs up front. They know their job, and they do it every day without proper recognition. But we know how good they are, and how tough they are, regardless if any of them are missing pieces of fingers.
Simple......we EXPECTED these rankings and outputs with this offense. So he didn't overperform. He........performed. Had we been top 10 in those categories, we'd have a different conversation.
More simple......we'll use comparison's sake. Bryan had the greatest VT offense ever assembled to work with, and came up with those stats and rankings. The almighty Bud Foster (moment of silent prayer that includes the words "please not Vanderbilt") had to put together a defense that included 7 new starters and was considered the youngest, by class, defense we've had in the last decade, and dealt with injuries to a couple starters. The almighty Bud Foster, for comparison's sake, took this not-greatest-defense-ever-assembled and popped everyone in the eye with a 16th national ranking in scoring defense and a 40th national ranking in total defense. (should also mention that for Bryan to get credit for being first in the nation in turnover margin, the lunchpail group had to play a part and bring in 30 of their own, also 4th in the nation by itself to bring in 30.)
So, before we all go fellating each other over Bryan's career year:
-Best VT offense ever assembled, Bryan's career year: 19th/38th nationally scoring/total offense.
-Run of the mill, Bud-Foster-does-what-Bud-Foster-does year: 16th/40th nationally scoring/total defense. In what was considered a "down" year for Saint Bud....
Comparisons are fun. I like Bud Foster. I like beer. And I like breasts.
See, simple.
And finally, the most simple, and most unfortunate part of this year for one Bryan Stinespring.
On Saturday, September 11th, we stood in a rainstorm to watch his alma mater score 21. And watch our alma mater score 16.
And for that, he'll never be forgiven. Ever. In fact, I still want to punch him in the neck.
FBS Mission Statement:
We at FBS believe that offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring bears the largest share of the blame for years of sub-par output from some of the most talented players ever to set foot on Worsham Field. We believe the main objective of the VT football program - a national championship - will escape us as long as Stinespring is making the calls. We therefore advocate the improvement of our football program through the replacement of our offensive coordinator.

For JMU, I want to punch him about two feet lower than his neck.
Just to let you know Fancy Gap is a town and a mountain, but certainly not a mountain range or whatever you intended when you said "We be slow in the Fancy Gap mountains, y'all." Way to try to make other people sound dumb, while perfectly displaying your own lack of understanding.
STFU Zag - THAT'S NOT THE ISSUE! The issue is a score from a game on Sept. 11, this season to an FCS School...JMfU 21-motherf-king 16! JMfU! Do you get it!? JMFU!!! S*T-CAN SPINELESSPRING!!!
In the meantime...how do we look/stack up against Luck & Stanford??? Can we pull that one off??
Fantastic analysis. I didn't understand until you explained it so eloquently. So what you are saying is that you are upset that we lost to JMU. You are of the opinion that in fact we should have won that game, and that as far as you can tell our offensive coordinator might just be the reason why we did not.
HokieZag:
Actually, the second I submitted the post tonight, Mrs. HokieJayBee beat you to the punch and already informed me that Fancy Gap is in fact, merely a town and a single mountain. I'll have to give her the nod here tonight with +1 internets as my hot wife, over the superb trolling you offered.
I also appreciate that that single line is all you garnered from my post. I take it you are from said region and took offense? For that, I apologize.
But not just to you. You see, I wasn't trying to make anyone "sound dumb" as you so eloquently professed. The statement was actually meant to be self-detrimental to all of us Hokies - as we're commonly the brunt of jokes due to our beloved school's Agricultural history and remote mountain location. While my point remained that we Hokies are all, in fact, *not* dumb. Perhaps consider relating some literary context to the entire piece of work, or even the subject paragraph, next time - before trying to illustrate your superior writing prowess.
But seriously, cheers man. Go Hokies. Read the rest of the post.
Zag - Perhaps you should check the heading (hehe, I said "heading") of this site. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with a locale that almost nobody cares about. Try staying on topic...or is that too fast for y'all? LMAO
Now that the purposeless banter has reached it's conclusion, back to the topic at hand...how do we match up against Luck, Harbaugh & Co.???
That's the reddest herring I've seen in a while.
Seriously, the only thing you have to comment on is that HJB made a geographical/topographical error?
LAC, full Orange Bowl preview to come, a bit closer to the game.
1) You call me a troll, but you run a website dedicated to hating on a single person.
2) Nothing else in the article was any different from any other article this blog has put out this year. Here is a brief synopsis, BS sucks, how could we lose to JMU?, Bud Foster is good, Beamer is old, I'm not satisfied unless we win a national championship. Does that cover it?
3) If I was going to illustrate my "superior writing prowess", I would have actually written more than 2 sentences about your article.
4) I used to like this blog. Over the past season though it has been less and less interesting to read, because of the repetitive posts.
Stanford opened up at -3 on the site I typically use for lines.
I get to claim last word since, as you point out, I run this website.
1) I don't hate the man. Hell, I don't know the man. I just don't want him to be my alma mater's football team's offensive coordinator any more.
2) As my last article points out, Bryan has had a good year statistically. For a website that has, in the past, used statistics to bash his coordinating of the offense - it's been a tough year, eh? Think, CNN.com on a slow news day.
3) You also would have spelled out the number two, as all numbers below 13 are spelled out in a paragraph medium.
4) It's been nice having you. We appreciate your click. In fact, with your click, and the immense amount (read: none) of advertisement revenue we secure monthly, we were able to pay our interwebs bill for another month.
Calm down Zag-Maybe you should invest in seeking help from an anger management therapist (heheh, the*rapist) since you appear to be in the habit of jumping the gun. Jaybee NEVER actually CALLED you a troll...he only stated that you trolled him in your response. Also, of course the posts are going to be repetitive. SpineLESSpring hasn't been canned yet, so until something along that nature occurs OR should some program be idiotic enough to pick him up, the message, mission & cause remains the same. Finally, this blog wasn't put up JUST for yours, mine or anyone else's personal enjoyment (though I confess I have derived much from it). So please, kindly remove the 2x4 from your tiny "fancy gap"
IH-I want to kick him 2 ft below the neck too. Problem is, he ain't got nothing there. LMAO
I grew up in a little place called Yuma...and that ain't in Arizona people. Drive toward Tennessee and just before you get to the state line, slam on the brakes and you have arrived. I grew up in a place that forced my accent to be pretty thick. Much thicker than most everyone else I met at my time at VT. And I thought the comment was pretty fuckin funny.
Oh, and I like breasts too!!!!
Jaybee - "Comparisons are fun. I like Bud Foster. I like beer. And I like breasts."
LMAO That was B-E-A-UTIFUL. Just a side question (with complete respect to your wondrful wife)...if you were single, would you like asian chicks too???
Zag-there's something sketchy about your responses on this post, so I'm just gonna say this...kindly remove SpineLESSpring's fist from your tiny, butt fancy gapping hole, insert foot in mouth, & step away from the keypad. That's it...there ya go. Thank you. :-)
I've checked out some stuff & I gotta be honest...I'm worried (as usual). The only other time we've faced a QB of Luck's calibre was the season opener against Kellen Moore. Also, (& just throwing this out there) we're like 0-2 or 0-3 against Pac-10 teams & in general we don't fare well against teams from the west (see: Cal in Insight & Kansas in '08 Orange Bowl). I have my doubts. There can be absolutely NO mistakes made if we're gonna have a chance to beat the cards.
Lets face it, the only way BS is NOT going to be OC for years to come is for him to get a HC job or if God calls him to spread the gospel in Central Africa.
Brad, do they still have those GARGANTUAN rabbits that live back in the woods in Yuma? I always heard jokes in middle school about the Yuma rabbits (went to Gate City) but I never actually saw one until my junior year of high school. I was freaking amazed at the size of those things.
Bored, are we? Yeah, we had a great season, but as was pointed out, Brian's kid called some plays in the red zone and was successful. Three regular posters here picked at random at any given point in any game this season could have called good plays with the talent available to them on this roster.
But let's look back at several other seasons and other games. VT hasn't exactly been lacking in the talent pool -- we just haven't had the numbers we have had this season. If they were used right, success was in our grasp -- we saw it happen in many games. We also saw it pissed away by dumb moves and poor play calling at just the wrong time.
One glaring example that still haunts us is the bowl game against Kansas. Victory was in our reach with a touchdown. Lee Suggs was tearing up the turf, gaining yards with tough runs that the Kansas defense couldn't deal with -- the ground game was working and we were headed toward a score. So what happened? We started throwing passes and the drive died, we couldn't finish and make the score, and Kansas went on to win by 3 points. People still wonder why Suggs didn't get the ball any more when he could have given us the win.
People with long memories (longer than just 10 games ago) hope that we don't see a repeat of such antics in the upcoming Orange Bowl. There was great anticipation after we turned the corner last year and wiped up the field with Tennessee. "Look at the offensive talent we will have in the fall." Yet it has been the strength of those players, not anything special from the coordinator, no new, different, unique plays to take advantage of that talent that got us where we are today. Just think of the season, the numbers we might have seen if we had someone competent doing the planning and playmaking.
Zag, sorry, but I have to call your bluff. There's a LOT of websites out there designed around calling for a coach or coordinator's job. Compared to a lot of them, I think this one is pretty tame.
Do we harp on the loss to JMU? Yes we do. Why? Because it's JMU. If you can't get that that one sticks in our craw a little bit then I suspect you're nothing more than an apologist.
But we also try to express our argument with levity and wit. We try to be a Hokie blog first, a blog about shitcanning Stiney second. Sometimes we succeed in being funny, sometimes we fail. But the last thing we want to become is another one of those blogs run by rabid, obsessed fans whose compulsion to hate their coaching staff drains every ounce of fun out of the sport of football. If we wanted to be like that we'd start following SEC football.
We think Virginia Tech would consistently field a better offense with someone else calling the plays. That's our position. We blog about that. As HJB's latest post points out, we think there's a place for Stiney on the staff as o-line or tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. Yes, we call the blog Fire Bryan Stinespring. But removestineyfromtheocpositionbutretainhisservicesinanothercapacity.com seems like it wouldn't get many webhits.
Your comments paint you as a nothing more or less than a gadfly to me. That being said, your comments and readership are welcome here. We try our best not to censor ideas or opinions unless someone complains (usually about language).
Joe Hokie - Branden Ore, not Lee Suggs.
Great article.
The side by side comparison of Bud Foster with BS was by far the most beautiful finish to an argument I have ever seen.
Go Hokies!
I was just thinking..... I sincerely hope that HokieZagnut doesn't TALK the same way he types. Dude....seriously??
I love this site and I agree with everything that is said by the bloggers that contribute to this site.
HokieJaybee and Illinois Hokie and other feature bloggers write what needs to be written in analytical, funny and accurate ways.
Truths can be said over and over again everyday forever and it will never get boring. The truth is we need a new offensive coordinator.
We might be hillbillies but we are a major football program and the king of the ACC. Bryan Stiniespring and Co. performed this year, not over-performed. And defense doesn't win championships. Offense and defense win championships.
If we had Bobby Petrino as our OC we would have won 5 national championships.
Thanks for the correction, IH. Combo of not enough coffee and distraction of a two-day problem at work (that I just solved! Hooray!) The sentiment is the same, though, there are lots of cases (BSU game just one of the latest) where an unnecessary change from the booth in the flow of the offense led to bad things happening. That shouldn't happen if there was someone competent in gametime situations in charge, which we don't have. Recruiting, yes. Coaching, yeah, I guess. But putting together a plan and MAKING ADJUSTMENTS during a game are not BS's strong suit. Just because some things went right in the last few games this season (which may be more because of T-Mobile and his experience than anything else) doesn't mean there was a sudden epiphany that is going to serve us perfectly until CFB retires.
Joe Hokie said: "Just because some things went right in the last few games this season (which may be more because of T-Mobile and his experience than anything else) doesn't mean there was a sudden epiphany that is going to serve us perfectly until CFB retires."
Yeah, that. +1 for Joe.
I for one love this blog and check it a few times a week. Stinespring has made WAY WAY WAY too many juvenile mistakes to justify his retention but I guarantee he will be back next year. I didnt have a problem with the way the game was called against FSU but I can never forgive him for us losing to JMU. And as far as your Fancy Gap comment goes, I thought it was funny because I have you all beat. I grew up in Bland County VA. Thats right B L A N D. Yes the name fits.
IH, I can guarendamntee that the rabbit that David Wilson caught this year wasn't from Yuma. Otherwise he might be missing more of a finger than Greg Nosal. They're more like jackalopes than rabbits.
B-Rock, I love Bland. My wife is from Tazewell, so we go though Rocky Gap when we head up that way. Though I feel that it is up for debate as to whether growing up near West Virginia or near Tennessee is the bigger hindrance to proper enunciation.
Oh, I haven't given up on my general angst about JMFUCKINGU all season.
Double Oh, I still like breasts.
Pitt fired their HC. I'm thinking if Bud gets this job and bring Torrian Gray along with him, we'll see how horrible Stiney really is.
Please, no, dammit no!
I read that our D & Stan's D our ranked almost the same. I think Stanford has one of the toughest Ds in the pac-10 (which, I know isn't saying much). What was the highest ranked D we faced this year & where were they ranked?
What the hell is taking Weaver so damn long in naming Foster HCIW!?!? They must want him out of there! Do you think Beamer is mental enough to recommend SpineLESSpring for HC when he retires!?!?
Brad - Is your wife from Tazewell, VA or Tazewell, TN?
Luvz - I've heard the reason why Weaver won't make Foster the HCIW is because he doesn't want to put any pressure on Beamer when he would "have" to retire. Like if Foster had a HCIW deal that said he would become HC within 5 yrs that would mean Beamer would have to leave after 5 years and he might not be ready to leave at that time and you could end up with a Bobby Bowden situation. But IMHO I think there are probably ways to get a HCIW deal for Foster done so we don't lose him to another team, which could very well happen with Pitt and Florida being open. I just pray he doesn't leave because I think it would be the beginning of the end for the program.
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!
http://espn.go.com/blog/acc/post/_/id/19739/hey-pitt-this-buds-for-you
If and when bud leaves, TG will be the next Hokie DC. Would you rather be DC at Pitt next year or at VT? With all those returning starters as sophs and jrs.? Don't forget if he leaves, bud is walking away from alot of future $$ at tech.
That said if he is going to go, he isn't getting any younger. As a hokie fan who appreciates what he has done, if Bud truly wants to be a HC now, I would thank him and wish him the best of luck. He has earned the chance.
Bud has nearly a HCIW deal in place. He has an escalation clause, lump sum payment at the end of his current contract.
In other words, please stay. At the end of your current contract, and Frank's, we'll review the situation.
It's nearly a HCIW deal, while not causing any stink in Frank's cereal a la Bowden at FSU.
However, the money/contract isn't enough to hold down a man that might want to go coach at Pitt (winnable BCS conference with team already in place and not horrible (read: not Vanderbilt) ).
Bud has definitely earned the chance to be a HC and I think he would be a great HC. I don't think the annuity deal that he has with VT is really going to keep him there if he is offered a HC job at a good school. I think Bud would get something like $800K if he remains at VT through 2015 or something like that. I don't know the specifics, but I think it's close to that. Pitt's former coach made over $1 Million this year (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2010-coaches-contracts-table.htm?loc=interstitialskip) and you never know what kind of a relationship Bud has with TG. Maybe he could convince him to go to Pitt with him? Who knows, Beamer may not even give TG the DC position if Bud left? I guess there is a lot that could happen if he leaves, but I think if Pitt offered him the job he would probably take it.
Stiney might actually get one of the HC jobs instead of Bud. His offenses have performed so well over the years that who could resist? Any takers? Florida? Pitt? Anybody in the ACC?
V1P3R - careful. Comments like that and the nanny state thought police might track you down for a drug test. Gov't types don't get sarcasm, especially not in print.
VTFan17, My wife is from Tazewell, VA. Make me an offer and I'm sure we can work something out for you to take her off my hands.
Brad - ROFL, No thanks I have my own wife and I can barely handle her. That's cool though, I was born and raised in Tazewell and still live there.
