Howdy FBSers. The IH here, on the mend from H1N1 and thoroughly pissed off about how many VT games are finding their way onto ESPN360, where absolutely nobody can watch them. I've got my Yahoo! Sports GameChannel open and I'm ready to kick back, sip some hot tea, hack my lungs out, and pontificate on what's about to go down in College Park.
Post your in-game thoughts and opinions here, won't you?
FBS Mission Statement:
We at FBS believe that offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring bears the largest share of the blame for years of sub-par output from some of the most talented players ever to set foot on Worsham Field. We believe the main objective of the VT football program - a national championship - will escape us as long as Stinespring is making the calls. We therefore advocate the improvement of our football program through the replacement of our offensive coordinator.

10:53 1Q - Nice opening drive, nice ball movement and a decent rush/pass ratio. Offense put points on the board early, precisely what they've had trouble with the past three weeks.
10:53 1st - Well, okay, maybe not. Let's see if they can punch it in from the 1.
10:53 1st - TOUCHDOWN TECH!
8:44 1st - Any debate that Xavier Boyce has been the biggest disappointment about the receivers so far? For a guy who supposedly earned the top spot on the depth chart during the spring, Boyce has showed nothing during the season
Follow up a great scoring drive with a 3 and out...
7:34 1st - And then Boyce follows up a drop with a block in the back on a punt return. Nice.
5:44 1st - Anyone else agree that with the play of the wideouts this year, despite the gripes against Stinespring, O'Cain, and Newsome, we can officially give a "pass" to wide receivers coach Kevin Sherman?
4:55 1st - You mean we still use tight ends? Attaboy, Andre Smith! TOUCHDOWN TECH!
1:00 1st - Sounds like more classic ACC officiating. Bad pass interference call...
End of 1st - Great play Chris Drager! Apparently the only way tight ends get to make plays this year is to convert to the defense.
we are doing well, but my problem is this is Maryland, we saw how we did vs better D teams.
15:00 2nd - Maryland obviously doesn't want to kick to Dyrell Roberts, but they fail to appreciate that David Wilson can return them too. That's fine by me.
@mainaman *shrugs* we can only comment on the game they're playing this week...
I casually posted about the possibility of Foster leaving and our continually sliding offense on my ESPN blog, username galaxycoff . (I also plugged you guys in a prev post.) To my surprise, the CommunityEds voted it up, drawing some attn and a few comments. CommunityEds has been very good to me in the past, I honestly didn't think they'd touch my coach dissing with a 10-foot pole.
@Jess we always appreciate the free pub :)
Boykin is playing a great game
13:20 2nd - I HATE challenges when I can't watch the game. Grrrrr.
@mainaman Boykin is money. Boykin/Roberts/Coale have potential to be better than Royal/Morgan/Harper. Like I said, as far as I'm concerned Kevin Sherman gets a passing grade this year.
looks like a blow out so far
11:37 2nd- TOUCHDOWN TECH! Looking like a BC instead of a GT. Fine by me.
11:37 2nd- TOUCHDOWN TECH! Looking like a BC instead of a GT. Fine by me.
IH you can't watch online?
I went on campus so I can watch.
out unis are looking very good by the way, I like the different look.
and a fluke on the EP..
11:37 2nd - Wish I could have seen that Charlie Brown kick by Meyer...
@mainaman no ISP within 50 miles of me has ESPN 360.
@mainaman I'd like to see a home version of this uni
chancelor.. tackles are not his forte..
correction Virgil
9:08 2nd - FINALLY a big stop on 3rd and short by this D. Foster could coach a high school jayvee roster to a top 30 total defense.
@mainaman Virgil's playing hurt, which is commendable. But with Eddie Whitley on the bench the question is...why?
Boykin is having a field day
8:10 2nd - TYROD! BOYKIN! MONEY! TOUCHDOWN TECH!
well this tackle was one on one, Virgil just overshot the guy..I guess the field being wet also does not help
Taylor has 3 passing TDs already. Looks like JuJu's gonna see some snaps today.
Now let's get R-Dub some carries so he can get a little closer to the record.
@mainaman I'm wondering if the standard practice of sliding the field corner over to the boundary corner has finally caught up to Foster. It worked from Brandon Flowers up through Macho Harris, but it looks like Virgil's having trouble making the transition.
@mainaman that could be injury related though.
7:40 2nd - Feeling a little sorry for this Maryland QB. First start against the Lunch Pail. Ouch.
6:36 2nd - We got Hosley for three more years, and he's only going to get better.
pretty good 3rd down conversion
Our DB's need to stop looking for the big shots.
1- The more you focus on hitting, the less good you are at wrapping and tackling.
2- I can't help but think it makes the officials look for equalizers in the way of so many late "pass interference" flags.
4:56 2nd - R-Dub only has 11 touches so far. No need to be resting him and bringing Oglesby in yet. Let R-Dub get his yards.
I think its time for more passing to open the field for some runs, the muddy conditions do not help the running game right now
super special team play, take that ball @ the 1 tyard
@mainaman in regards to this being Maryland, games like this shed light on how much talent we have on offense and is that much more of a condemnation of Stinespring's inability to utilize that talent against all of VT's opponents.
@krakatoa I agree, this year's DBs are overplaying. Might have something to do with the fierce competition at that position, everyone feels they have to reearn their spot every week. And I think Chancelor's trying to be too much of a leader.
I like the play calling, today, I am not sure why Stiney can't keep up against better D teams?
2:14 2nd - I'm not going to berate the defense for giving up a first down there because it's all second-stringers in there. This is valuable experience for Bruce Taylor.
Frankly when we have the better Offensive games, I am thinking someone else is calling the plays
Looks like our signature "Give up a big scoring drive at the end of the 1st half."
@mainaman better D's make Stiney have to make adjustments to his original gameplay on the fly, which is something he cannot do. I actually wouldn't mind a setup where Stinespring draws up the game play before the game but someone else, either O'Cain or Tyrod, makes ALL the in-game adjustments.
@krakatoa I'm cool with that, it's mostly backups in there. They need this experience and we can actually afford it.
what a play by Virgil,
perfect strippage
QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Maryland's offense today is the quarterback don't-get-decapitated run." - Bill Roth
Their QB seems to be feeling down, I can't blame him hehe
0:07 2nd - HUGE stop there! Proud of the young guys on D. They DESPERATELY needed that one.
Gt.. so much hate for them , hope they play Climpsin and get handled in the ACCCG
Mike Burnop just mentioned the OC at Maryland is their HCIW. Is the Fridge retiring soon?
@mainaman yup looks like another 12:49 until VT is officially out of the ACCCG. What a f--king crime with this offensive talent. F--k Bryan Stinespring.
HALFTIME - Time for some snackage. And Robitussin.
the fridge has 2 years I think left by contract and then he is leaving.
He can leave earlier via firing but I am not sure MD has the money for the buyout.
That probably should have been pass interference.
BS is calling the same plays he has all year.
His offensive strategy absolutely depends on either 100% mistake free execution by 11 players, or on being bailed out by an exceptional individual effort. AND it depends on no exceptional individual efforts on the other side of the ball.
It leads no room for error, and is a very fine line. Especially with TT who, let's face it, rarely throws to a receiver in stride. I blame the QB coach for some of that, and I blame BS for that as well, as I suspect these plays are not practiced enough to make the timing of those plays a thing of habit.
Against inferior talent it is hard to blow it, but he pretty consistently stinks it up in those scenarios anyway because all it takes is one bad pass, or one blown blocking assignment to stop a drive.
Against equivalent talent it makes him look very suspect, and requires lights out play by the D, and getting out to a quick lead.
Against equivalent talent and a less than exceptional effort by our D, it equates to a loss.
@krakatoa I'm gonna have to call you out a little on the comment about Tyrod. He's really come into his own as a passer this year and has been placing his passes well. I have to give Tyrod high marks as a passer this season. 3 of his incompletions today have been drops.
@krakatoa Agree with pretty much everything else you said though. Stinespring's biggest shortcoming (I'll say it again) is he can't adjust on the fly when his premeditated game plan isn't working perfectly.
@krakatoa Against Marshall, Miami, BC, and today against Maryland, B-Stine's original gameplan worked as drawn up. No need for adjusments makes him look competent. Against Bama, Nebraska, GT, and UNC we needed adjustment, and he just could not come through. Thankfully Tyrod came through against Nebraska (hitting Danny Coale and Dyrell Roberts perfectly in stride I might add) and prevented a completely metldown in our first three games.
Mike Burnop just said this game was only the second time all season VT's scored a TD on its first possession. That's unacceptable.
oh snap , a pass to Boone?
Stiney called that by mistake I am sure
Don't get me wrong -- I think TT is greatly improved.
I'm nitpicking really, but I'd really like to see more passes come in stride across the middle, giving players like Roberts the opportunity to make some open field moves.
The long TD to Boykin really should have been stopped at the point of the catch. It was flukey in that the DBs sort of took themselves out of the play, in part because of the stagger in the route due to the late pass.
Too often, the timing is off, and the receiver either has to lay out for the catch or wait for the ball, negating the opportunity for YAC.
Why the hell do we keep trying the end around?
That drive just made my point.
He had Boykin wide open crossing, with no pressure, and he got the ball to him late.
Again, I think its due to lack of repetitions in practice, not a knock on TT.
@krakatoa I hear ya. I'd probably be more concerned with hitting receivers perfectly in stride if Tyrod didn't have a cannon of an arm. Consider that this is Tyrod's second year throwing to these receivers, though. They've got one more year together to get it perfect.
8:29 3rd - AND it's official. GT has beaten Duke and punched their ticket to Tampa. VT is officially an also-ran in the Coastal. Now we're playing for the Chick-fil-a Bowl.
Yeah, when you only have 4 offensive plays, the occasional end-around is pretty easy to defend.
7:49 3rd - This no huddle is killing our D.
Great D by Carmichael
Reminds me of last year vs UVA.
Bud Foster's weakness is a super-mobile QB. But hell, that's a danger to just about anyone.
But I'd like to see a spy on that kind of QB, who only blitzes when there is a clear shot, but primarily is there to contain.
6:49 3rd - ANOTHER huge stop! Very impressed by this Hokies D.
@krakatoa Speaking of Virginia, anyone else worried about what happens with Al Groh is shown the door at the end of the year?
RW really is hard on himself. I imagine he'd be upset if he couldn't make a cut on ice.
6:29 3rd - Give R-Dub the rock until Maryland proves they can stop him.
Yeah, Al Groh has been a blessing for VT in-state Recruiting.
and we have the usual bad play calling in the red zone...
3:08 3rd - Another drive stalled inside the 10. THAT might be the biggest gripe I have of Stiney this year. Falling apart in the red zone. That's all on the OC.
can't we at least once set up an outside run or something?
I imagine they'll let RW get another shot at his 100, then he'll sit.
@krakatoa I'm referring to who might be interested in the head coaching job at UVA...
Yeah I'd love to see what Stiney has to say about this fail?
Can't blame that on e on execution..
@mainaman We have some long receivers for once. Where's the fade?
@mainaman If it can't be blamed on execution, Stiney won't mention it.
I cannot wait to see Hosely over the next couple years.
Hosleay is so fast , I have great hopes for him next year
Oh, I have no idea who might take the UVA job.
Haven't been paying any real attention to it.
IH,
I just hope someone ask him for an explanation.. I know that will not happen however
Hosley is our next Brandon Flowers. Probably better, actually.
Just the next in a long line of great Torrian Gray DBs.
@mainaman I'm sure Kyle Tucker will ask the hard hitting questions.
Another ball thrown behind the receiver.
Timing.
looking for the big gain again, pass short underneath, there is enough room for 15-20 yard gain..
2:19 3rd - Okay, enough with the deep passes. Prove you can kill the clock.
@mainaman Here we'll see for the first time if Stiney can adjust. He's gone with the long pass because it's been there all day. Now it's time to chew clock, and that means finding a way to run in this much. Can he find a way to do it?
Damn...almost
That's a money play.
I am so tired of the handoff out of shotgun that doesn't involve misdirection.
That play was gold against Miami & BC.
Didn't see it at all against GT or UNC.
125 rushing yards for R-Dub. Outstanding. I say keep him in and see if he can break the record today.
I am thinking maybe its time to put DWilson in there for a confidence builder?
1:00 3rd - Big run for Tyrod. We need more of that.
MD uses camo cleats, that look as if they are dirty..
@mainaman Actually in these conditions I'd keep Wilson on the bench. Bringing him in cold in this mess would be a big injury risk. Williams has been running in it all day. He knows what he feels like. Plus one more big rip and he's got the freshman rushing record. I say why the hell not.
@krakatoa speaking of GT, did VT ever officially say what R-Dub had that week? Just a bug or was it H1N1?
WTF...
same shit as last red zone trip...
I'd like to see Marcus Davis in at QB, DWilson and Oglesby in to get some reps... most important thing is to keep RW and TT healthy - we're up 30 points.
15:00 4th - RUN OUTSIDE FOR CHRIST SAKE!!!
@mainaman Bill Roth just brought this up and it's a good point: Frank doesn't want to run the score up on Ralph. They're good friends and Frank's a class act.
@Karthik wouldn't it be JuJu at QB? Marcus lost that battle in the spring.
If Stiney , has a little bit of creativity left in him, he will practice 3-4 Wild Turkey plays for the red zone, that can get points I am sure
Naa. Time to sit RW. I get your logic, Main, but who would you rather lose to an injury?
We've got two great backs in reserve right now. Time to get them carries IMO.
And no IH, I never heard what the illness was. But I live in SC 3 weeks out of the month, and work near Chicago one week a month, so I'm not in the B'burg mix anymore.
@Karthik regardless of Marcus/JuJu, I'd normally agree with you, but with the conditions being what they are I think bringing in a cold backup QB or TB would put them at more of an injury risk than leaving in the starters. This muck is difficult to negotiate and Tyrod and R-Dub already know that it feels like. I say ride em out.
Two comments:
-- good game but, unfortunately, this game moves us further away from firing Bryan Stinespring
-- is it me, or is OUR OFFENSE ALWAYS AT ITS BEST WHEN 1) IT'S TOO LATE TO WIN THE GAME OR 2) THE SEASON IS ALREADY LOST?
who is watching the game?
any thought on the unis?
I like them
If I'm guessing, though, Tyrod and R-Dub are done for the day if I know Frank's style.
@Ted you'll never get me onboard with your demented VT implosion deathwish... But good to see ya anyway. :)
The old backup Cam Martin just gave a lesson to Jake Johnson.
Jake is an animal, but he hasn't learned to keep a low center of gravity and change direction when the QB tries to sidestep the sack.
13:30 4th - Yup, here comes JuJu. I'm guessing that means Oglesby and Wilson the rest of the way too. Well, we'll see R-Dub break the record next week. Maybe on TV for once...
I'm watching on 360.
Yeah, I like the all-white uniforms.
@krakatoa Is Jake Johnson a true frosh?
11:34 4th - Bryan Stinespring, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT CALL YOU DOUCHEBAG???????
exactly as I thought , Stine will stink it up.. when we have top run we pass when we have to pass we run...
11:34 4th - Some reporter SOMEWHERE had better have the balls to CRUCIFY Stiney over that call.
That was all TT.
But hey, at least it's another TD our O scored. Too bad it's an own-goal.
Bad play call and TT hung on too long.
If I am Bud , I am runnig up to the booth to kick Stiney' but
lol wtf?
@krakatoa That TT held on too long was academic. Never should have been called. Biggest criticism on Tyrod for that play was that he didn't audible out of it.
Is that a new take on the flea-flicker?
I bet Stiney takes credit for that one as a designed play ;)
10:50 4th - THAT'S why you don't put your backups in under these conditions. They don't know what the ball or the field feel like.
wow...he really has no idea how to call a game. We are up. We have the best running back in the country. We should run the ball no matter where we are on the field.
The ball bounced our way on that one. Not too often we're going to see a crazy fumble like that.
Mad props to Tyrod for saving that play though.
Great play,
glad to see Wilson block right
if anyone other than Williams is in, it should be Wilson, not ever Ogelsby....ever.
Why...are...we...still...PASSING????
ok that pitch to Oglesby, why do you put the guy to fail?
Run the play to the outside not the inside..
Stiney calls outside runs only if they can be ran in the narrow of the field..
I actually liked the play call. At least it an attempt at unpredictability.
But I missed all but the end of it... I'm guessing the formation gave it away.
JJ is a sophomore I think.
@mainaman Frank just wants the game to be over. He's not going to run it up on his buddy. And that's fine, I have no problem with that. We've proven they can't stop us when we're actually playing to score.
@mainaman the problem, of course, is that we saw over the 4th quarter what happens when Stinespring has to do something different. That pass out of the endzone...pure BS.
Yeah, Bud Foster is not going to be pleased with that scoreboard at all.
I'm guessing he breaks one off in BS's ass.
@krakatoa good poing, Stiney just fucking tripled the scoring defense in this game. Douchebag.
Jake Johnson very nearly got himself a late hit call there.
He does not play smart yet. Hopefully next year he'll put it all together for us.
did RW break DE's record in rushing and Td's by freshman? I think the TD records belongs to RW now, not sure about the rush yards
I'm so conflicted on whether to give Stiney a D or an F for this one. The offense clicked in the first half, but Stinespring's true colors showed in the second half. Again, not the low scoring, that was Beamer not roughing up his old coaching buddy. But there were some genuinely STUPID play calls in the second half, one of which put six points on the board for the Twerps.
Wow!
So ACC officials do know what a crackback block is?
I didn't think it was in their vocabulary.
@mainamain R-Dub's got the TDs, but my guess he needs about 24 yards for the yardage record.
@krakatoa we needed this crew when we played GT.
I am sticking with a solid F just because of the BS call in the end zone
Holy hell I thought Wilson was dead there.
you have 3 downs to get the first down, and you throw the ball trying to gain 10 yards on 1st down?...solid F from me
Poll's up.
Man.
I wish Cam had been able to dodge the injuries. I get the feeling he would have been one of the great ones.
hah. And Jake misses another sack.
He needs to learn to keep his balance and adjust to the QB shift.
@krakatoa Jake's just so raw. I have the feeling if Foster can ever really corral him he'l be something special.
Arright. That's it for me.
I'd give BS a C on the surface. Average, but only because he wasn't forced to change his game plan.
If MD had schemed any better, or had better players, it would have illuminated his weaknesses more starkly and dropped him into a D or F most likely.
Don't get me wrong. I think an OC for VT should be getting A's & B's for 90% of the games if he wants to maintain his job. Especially against teams like this year's Maryland.
BS must go.
@IH Agree. I think he could be a great one. Just needs to settle into the game.
If they can couple Grimm's football IQ to JJ's raw talent, he would be a terror.
You know, I gave BS a B today... I was there... he called a halfway decent game. Tyrod is getting better every game... taking what is given to him.
HG, that pass call out of their own end zone killed it for me. That was simply inexcusable.
IH:
I think it was a good call if it had been a play that didn't telegraph itself.
So an "A" for the right idea - calling a pass on an obvious run down. An "F" for lack of practice, set & execution. It should have at least included a designed rollout to keep TT from being trapped in a collapsing pocket once his one route was blown up.
That's the problem when your playbook is pretty much 3 or 4 set plays. Every wrinkle that you do have has either been easy to study for, since there are so few plays to watch film on, or if its something the D hasn't seen before, they are reminded to play their assignments.
If you can't disguise plays, run multiple plays out of the same set, etc..., you are just killing yourself every time you think you are pulling a fast one.
That is why our reverses are so obvious. The one game it did well in, we ran the fake multiple times, and RW's effectiveness on the direct handoff set up the eventual big gainers it got. How many times did we fake it on Saturday?
This is why the counter on the draw out of the shotty is so effective. Everything looks like it's going in one direction, and RW makes one guy miss on the way to a big gainer.
IH, I think I left before that play... we were at 30 points and we departed... along with half of the stadium... to tailgate.
