FBS Mission Statement:

We at FBS believe that offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring bears the largest share of the blame for years of sub-par output from some of the most talented players ever to set foot on Worsham Field. We believe the main objective of the VT football program - a national championship - will escape us as long as Stinespring is making the calls. We therefore advocate the improvement of our football program through the replacement of our offensive coordinator.

We moved from 4th to 3rd...

...but it was 4th in the nation to 3rd in the ACC Coastal (soon to be 4th, assuming Miami finishes off Central Florida).

That first half was embarrassing. They made us one-dimensional by taking away the inside run with Williams, but Oglesby was still able to tear off a few yards between the tackles, but when he failed to gain a yard outside the tackles (where he should never be asked to go), we gave up on him.

I can't help but get the feeling that we don't exploit the weaknesses we expose in other teams. Georgia Tech left Tyrod all but unattended, yet the draw play was not in use, nor was the dump to the RB - who was usually open - until the second half. In the first half, I even saw one of Stiney's old "high percentage pass" calls - AKA a dump to the flats for a loss.

Williams and Taylor played well, all things considered. Taylor logged 2 INT's, but only one was a legitimate turnover since the other was to a defender on the ground in the end zone after time had expired in the first half. Williams had ANOTHER 100 yard game (his fifth, for those of you who are counting). He's now just 166 yards shy of the 1000 yard mark for the season.

New grade scale is up. Feel free to do some venting in the comments...

I was almost on the "Stinespring has been rehabilitated bandwagon" until this game. Now I hate him even more than I used to. I mean how do you basically abandon the pass when they showed they can't do anything against it.

"Ram it down the middle and it has to work at least once. Then when it does work and Williams gets a TD, Stinespring feel justified to do it again and again. No need to pass, since that might actually win the game. God I fucking hate Stinespring right now.

To be fair, Foster shit the bed with the option. Didn't matter that was the only thing they could do, we didn't feel the need to stop it. But if our offense was anything but ass backwards, we still could have won this game.

I am so fucking pissed right now.

Stiney and Beamer thought we could go into ATL and just run it every play right down their throats. They had 8 or 9 in the box every play. I was counting. We were far too predictable. An end around to Dyrell Roberts might have actually worked in today's game because of how aggressive GT was on d. They sold out to stop our run and stopped our run except for the one RW run...

That second TT interception (in the endzone, last play of the first half) wasn't an interception. If you Tivo'd the game play it back. The defender obviously scoops the ball off the turf and back into his arms before coming up with it.

Not that it matters for shit, but it's one more instance of completely shitty officiating this game.

While I'm at it, that was a TERRIBLE spot on the refs' part after Williams clearly got the first down on second effort early in the second half.

You think after 13 years of nonexistant offense and bieng in 100 or less in totla offense for the last last eight-somthing years, some1 wld notice? no instead espn talks about how the coaches work together. not stinespring he is an iddiot. i have noticed that whenever VT lososes a game, stinespring decided to stick with a certainc stupid running strategy of running up the middle every play for the entire game. it didnt work. yes williams had over 100 yards, but that was mostley cause of his big run in the 4 quarter. other then that it didnt work. Tyrod has gotten better as a passer and has stingy ever thought of passing it to Boone once in a while????? also he calls the worst third down plays. 4 and4(or 3) and we run right up the middle, enev thought GT was loding up the box the whole entire game. GT knew what we were going to run, hell every1 saw the game for more then 2 minutes knew what tech was going to run

Gonna say it one more time...lay this one at the feet of the D. We had no answers for the triple options and got pushed around on the D line like high schoolers. We didn't have the ball often enough in the second half to even make it a game...not Stiney this time guys

Adam,
Read other's arguments in this blog and the rest of the ones posted tonight. Our d played bad in the 2nd half, but it WAS still Stiney this time also! Bottom line: VT should have went in at the half with a good 1-2 td lead. Instead, because of Stiney, we went in at the half trailing. The offense did NOTHING for 3 quarters and you want to give Stiney a free pass? GT put a minimum of 8-9 players in the box to stop the run and no adjustments were made. We tried to run it on them when they had a numbers advantage every time! No misdirections, no screens, no adjustments... Bud got outadjusted at the half but Stiney put our team in the hole starting from the first snap of the game on!

I'm not giving Stiney a free pass...I've been calling for his head for years now. Yes, the D was gassed by the end of the game and YES we should have scored some points in the first half. It was just a bad game on both sides of the ball.

Adam,
The d almost completely shut GT out in the first half! They were held to about 37 yds rushing (a season low) and the D gave the offense great starting field position pretty much the entiure first half. What did the offense do with it? How about nothing! The D played great in the first half. The offense SHOULD have taken advantage of it. Instead, the defense is demoralized and gassed by the end of the game. Paul Johnson also outadjusted Bud at the half, but that rarely happens to Bud. VT should have been up 1-2 tds minimum at the half. I am 100% convinced we lost the game in the first half when we did not go in at the half up with a nice lead. If we had, the game would have been entirely different and GT's offense would have had to play catch up and might have been forced to leave their comfort zone and throw the ball more. That did not happen because, as usual in Stiney's tenure as OC, the offense did not carry its own weight and hold up its end of the deal for basically 3 quarters! Why? Stiney stubbornly stuck to his original gampeplan despite the fact GT's defense made huge adjustments to prepare for us. They completely sold out to stop the run. Some plays they had 10 or 11 in the box. Sat night was typical Stiney. Back to turtle mode!

I'm agreeing with you. We didn't take advantage of scoring opportunities in the first half and the D did a great job. In the second half GT made the adjustments and we weren't able to counter. It takes 4 quarters of football to beat a good team. All I'm saying is that there's plenty of blame to go around for this one. Saying it was all Stiney's fault misses the point.

Bud has had a great D for years and maybe he deserves some slack on this one. I just think there were failures on both sides of the ball.
