FBS Mission Statement:
We at FBS believe that offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring bears the largest share of the blame for years of sub-par output from some of the most talented players ever to set foot on Worsham Field. We believe the main objective of the VT football program - a national championship - will escape us as long as Stinespring is making the calls. We therefore advocate the improvement of our football program through the replacement of our offensive coordinator.
1) A shot at a National Championship.
2) A shot at an ACC Championship.
3) A shot at a 6th consecutive 10-win season.
4) Our dignity as a football powerhouse.
This is ridiculous. It's time to take action. If
this kid can get a billboard, we can at least do SOMETHING.

what the HELL were we doing on 3rd and 7 running between the tackles.....someone PLEASE explain that little piece of brilliance to me
if Beamer doesnt fire stinespring after this season than he needs to be let go to, this is ridiculous, we have so much talent, stinespring is such a joke its unbelievable
Concise and truly spoken as usual. Props.
And by the way, the 2 people who voted D performance so far are extremely generous souls. I hope they are professors that will be assigning my grades after a massive class curve. I'm sorry but that was just a plain FAIL performance. By FAIL I mean, some of those plays were the absolutely worst possible calls in the situation. The WORST.
the loss to unc will scar us. it was the lack of O in the first half, like the gt game, that did us in
which of the 4 play calls is everyone complaining about? and by 4 play calls, i don't mean 4 certain plays during the game. i mean the 4 play calls that we run, over, and over, and over.
g*d d*mmit bryan. i'm seriously done with you. you're a f*cking joke and you've made over 3/4 of a million dollars in salary over the past three seasons. what a joke. you're a failure, a failure.
move to australia. go. leave.
That's so effin' true, Soilwolf... the offense cannot come up empty on so many drives... we were across the 40, what? 4-5 times in the first half? That's bullsh*t that we can't score with that type of field position.
how many losses does it take until change is made. its obvious our gameplan didnt work. where is our TE in the passing game? where are our sustained, clock killing drives?
Boone has to be effin' pissed... 5 effin' receptions this year... FML!!
Last year's 4 loss season was somewhat understandable considering the team was so young, and we basically played as well as anyone else in the ACC.
These 2 losses are simply inexcusable. How frustrating to watch the offense blow such great field position 2 games in row. Watching a #100 ranked offense suck week in and week out last year (and the year before, and before..)is frustrating...but it's possibly more frustrating to watch the O play like they did at BC, and then completely regress in the following games.
It was still exciting thinking we could close the season with 5 wins, maybe hope for a Duke upset of GT, and at least see the Hokies win 10 and make a respectable bowl. No it's just downright dreary. I feeling like I'm watching the 2003 season again.
If you're truly serious, the most effective thing you can do is to specify your donation for a program other than football. You will still get the same credit in the Hokie Club.
Give to Volleyball, Women's Soccer, Track, Cross County, anything. They will be more than happy with the money.
And if they try an end run around such, there's a simple solution to that as well. Show up at the annual meeting and vote to elect a slate of officers that will not tolerate such shenanigans.
This can work.
I mentioned that on twitter abou two hours ago... 2003... scary isn't it.
Jonathon, my money has been moving to men's basketball slowly.
women's soccer and men's basketball for me. and i'm calling 1 800 VATECH4 tomorrow and telling them my intentions.
i'm not kidding.
im rooting for our opponents from here on out (except uva). if stiney is going to be fired, it has to be this season. I will take stiney being fired over a 10 win season any day.
FIRE BRYAN STINESPRING
I say we fire Stiney and use the money to reopen a rest area on 81.
Well... here's where I part, Erich... I will never root for my Hokies to lose... ever.
erich is suggesting a means to an end. because if we beat maryland, ecu, nc state, and uva - and then someone in some shit bowl - then we'll have 10 wins.
and beamer and hite will suck each other off again about how we're just like texas and usc and we're going to keep our coaching staff together for continuity and loyalty. and how we're going to be different next year on offense.
and we live another year with stinesuck. hokieguru, erich makes a valid point. 5-5 gets some changes. as bad as it would suck....they're be changes.
i meant "there'd be changes".
it's late.
Most pathetic display of play-calling I've ever seen in Lane was tonight. Stinedick has remained an employee as long as he has simply because of the raw talent of the players. Hope the door hits him in the ass on the way out.
I always listen to the after game comments both on the local radio and sometimes espn (if they talk about it at all which is only if it is significant). ESPN is certainly not afraid to criticize the play calling (which they did during half time a little) however the local radio interviewed stinespring and beamer and gets me after even this they say the same thing. " we just didn't execute" "we just weren't consistent" "UNC is a really good football team" ect. I don't expect a lot but I'd like some good honest answers someday. You can't change what you don't acknowledge. You know.
Stinespring sounded absolutely speechless but still beat around the bush. During the game he looked confused and frustrated up in the booth every time the camera focused on him.
The day Stinespring publicly admits on radio or even any of the coaches or players "We made some bad calls and decisions " I will be so satisfied because at least they take responsibility and acknowledgment and that is one of the signs of a great coach.
But they can't even face reality and tell the fans the truth and Beamer gets so upset whenever confronted with such questions. What gives?
This game was GT part deux.
B-Stines FINALLY made some adjustments on the first-drive of the second half, having Tyrod audible out of obvious running formations when UNC stacked the box.
IT TOOK HIM THE ENTIRE 1st HALF TO FIGURE THAT OUT?!!?
Whats with the completely predictable play calling? Why is he so obsessed with running between the tackles?
This game should have been handled in the first half. We should have been up by 10 at least or maybe 14.
the traditional "we did not execute well" excuse is so useless..
While there were a few plays that a block failed or a pass was not thrown catchable, there was a ton of plays where nothing can happen because UNC was defending so well.
I wonder how long before the players give up effort for being constantly thrown under the bus?
Yes, Stiny made bad calls. We expect it. But it wasn't Stiny who was physically whipped on the line on both sides of the ball. It wasn't Stiny who threw all those bad passes in the first half. It wasnt Stiny who fumbled the game away. It wasn't Stiny who missed all those tackles and allowed ONE OF THE WORST OFFENSES IN THE NATION TO RUN ALL OVER US.
but it was Stiney who put his players in bad positions, in bad situations, in predictable situations, in a situation to lose. when i'm sitting on my couch or the stands, and i see our formation, our personnel, and the pre-snap motion - and i can tell you exactly what play we're going to run - don't you think paid professional defensive coordinators and coaches can do the same?
our defense is young, REAL young. to give up 20 at home, with this inexperienced of a defense, i'm satiated with that. we can't score 21?
i so wish beamer took live calls again. how bad does it have to get, i want an honest answer. how bad of a team, of a product, of a representation of our university - does it have to get for him to be willing to make a change?
stiney and beamer just need to quit throwing their players under the bus and take ownership of their failures. look, i don't care that ryan williams fumbled the ball. that's a mistake, it happens. it was a physical error. but to be this horrible, predictable, futile, useless - on offense - week after week, YEAR AFTER YEAR - that's not "we just didn't execute". that's a trend. that's a systematic problem. ryan williams didn't fumble to 0 points in the first half although DOMINATING THE FIELD POSITION BATTLE.
our game, our wins, bud foster's defense and pressure is predicated upon a good start to our games. picture different GT and UNC games if took advantage of our first halves in those games. picture 17-7 VT lead in both those games and tell me the second halves don't go differently.
"we didn't execute" is right, only beamer and stinespring better be talking about themselves. we = the coaches, not these 18-22 year old kids. these are kids, who are learning to play football from "coaches".
bryan, i hope you read this website. you are a failure. you are not good at your job. you might be a great guy and i don't wish you any personal harm. and i don't wish your family any hardships, so when you leave VT i hope you land on your feet. in fact since we can look up your salary as a state employee, we know your money situation is fine. but you're out of your league as an OC. you are not good at your job. please just resign. just be a prideful hokie and leave. please.
any stinespring lovers, or apathetic fans that might almost tell us to stop berating him - if you care anything about VT football and success - just admit we need a change. we need a shake-up. and it has to be bryan. we are not a big time football school with bryan stinespring in such a high profile job. we just aren't.
Don't they still do Hokie Hotline from a restaurant? Isn't it Bull and Bones this year? (Hard for me to know, being in Illinois and never being able to listen to it.)
Anyway, if they still do the show on a live remote (as opposed to in a bunker, as Beamer would probably prefer after this loss) then we could always organize a sit-in. Just tell everyone to be at Bull and Bones on Monday and as soon as the mics go hot start demanding answers.
Sure, a lot of people will get tossed out of the restaurant, but the worst they could get anyone for is a citation. There's nothing illegal about being too loud in a restaurant and leaving when being asked. The important thing would be for no one to tip their hand before the broadcast begins.
I suppose I need to state this disclaimer...Stinespring has no business being OC. But as someone who has played and coached football, I know when you are whipped on the line of scrimmage, it does not matter what play you call. Our OL and DL were whipped. Its embarrassing. Its irrational to hang it all on Stiny. Not this time.
I love all you guys because you're Hokie Fans, but this singular finger pointing at Stiney is a bit trifling. Yeah, sure Stiney is a bonehead, but what about the 2000 lb pink elephant in the room? This is the 2nd game in a row that Big Bud has been outschemed. VT is not stopping the run this year. Big chunky runs, at that. We've got to get that straight, or the Carquest Bowl could become a yearly tradition.
*sigh* Such a disappointing game. I think this was another game where both the offense and defense played poorly. I think this was a team failure. Bad play calling, bad execution. How many times did we go three and out? How many missed tackles did we have. What about that one long possession UNC had in the 4th that took 9 minutes!? Should have been able to stop that, maintained a 3 point lead, and killed the clock ourselves.
There's a lot of issues here. I don't think it's just the offense. I think the defense is off this year. We were an even younger team last year, yet we still won the ACC Championship, got into a BCS bowl, and won that.
Even the sideline commentator noted the UNC Defense recognized that we were running the same 3 or 4 plays over and over again. Good Luck VT for the rest of the season - I'll be staring at a wall instead - it's at least consistent and does what it's supposed to do. It also doesn't give me near heart attacks. I'll come back and cheer when Stinespring is gone.
Yes the defense is weaker this year then in the past but I will give them a pass on dropping from a top 10 D over the past five years. If we had an offense that could consitently do one of the following: control the ball, take advantage of field position, or get out to a early lead, the D would still be in the top 30 this year, easy. The offense has not come close to achieving this in recent years. Why the double standard? I know Beamer Ball is built around D as much as special teams, but there should not be the amount of disparity in production between the D and O that has and does exist.
i was saving a couple points for my own post next week, but in reading mark's responses, i have to let one little nugget out now.
not singling mark out, no inter-hokie-fan fighting here, he just brings out a couple points i was going to make next week, but i'm not going to wait.
mark says: "But as someone who has played and coached football, I know when you are whipped on the line of scrimmage, it does not matter what play you call. Our OL and DL were whipped. Its embarrassing. Its irrational to hang it all on Stiny. Not this time."
funny because stiney was our OL coach for 8 years. so if we're failing there, as OC, shouldn't he step in as a person in a higher position of authority and help curt newsome coach the OL? wouldn't that be what a manager (lead coordinator) does to help a struggling supervisor (positions coach newsome) with his subordinates (the O line)? failure #1844374632 as OC.
and, and, and, he's the f*cking tight ends coach. so he's the coach who coaches the tight ends, and then is the OC, and then calls the plays? and he's got 5 tight end catches this year in 8 games? greg boone has got to be pissed off, stinespring has cost him an NFL career unless he wants to switch to O line himself.
and to Todd's point. yes, the sideline reporter actually said on the air last night, from a halftime talk with BUTCH DAVIS, the UNC head coach, that butch said UNC would be fine because on D they'll be fine, only having to stop the same 4 plays that VT is running. when ESPN sideline reporters are taking this to the live air feed, there is a problem.
I just can't believe with as much talent we have in Blacksburg that we couldn't find a way to put points on the board in the first quarters of the last two games.
How embarrassing is it to have ESPN commentators saying that when VT gets the ball in the redzone that VT is going to run and that's what they did.
There are sooooooo many problems here that pointing one out seems agonizing but...
Offensive line sucks every year!
We don't use the talent we have.
We have an unpredictable QB, not that sometimes he is good and sometimes not but rather I think if a good coordinator had him he would be a real badass but with the four plays we run he becomes just another guy taking snaps.
We run the ball up the middle in our 2 minute offense and every time we get the ball in the redzone.
We have great tailbacks but those predictable up the middle calls, it allows defenses to load the box and we still try to shove RW or last year DE through(except when we play Kansas whose used to teams passing the ball three times a play ha ha).
Greg Boone has become just a blocker?
So much talent not being used properly.
I wish Stinespring would leave. It's obvious that he is not a good OC. We have sucked every year he has held the position except when our defense scores and this isn't happening as often this year.
In the end, this is Beamer making poor decisions. He chooses Stiney over the individual players, the team and the fans.
It seems to be that when things aren't working Beamer is determined to fix them not change them. Running the ball up the middle will eventually work once a game if executed right but if the defense gives up a few points you are going to lose. Let's face it, there are a lot of great OCs out there who can score quickly and often, so when you finally get the execution you are losing.
Same goes for keeping the same bad Offensive Coordinator. He worked against BC and Miami and Cincinnati but his execution has just been off every year against somebody like GT UNC Nebraska(TT saved us) and last year against ECU Miami FSU and BC.
Maybe Beamer should consider reflexivity instead of how 18 to 22 year olds are executing and that he is the problem because his decisions to continue with a failed offense keeps VT from achieving what most of us think could be achieved.
Maybe I'm delusional and TT Boone Dyrell Roberts Jarrett Boykin Eddie Royal Josh Harper Josh Morgan et al are just average and running the ball up the middle is the most productive play in college football.
Mark, I think you fail to remember just how many times we punted in the first half while also keeping UNC to negative yardage. The fact of the matter is that it doesn't matter how bad they are, we can't play with one half our football team for the entire game and expect to win.
I should add that in addition to specifying your donation to a specific sport not called football, you should also make a donation at the minimum club level you are at.
This was an easy decision for me after last night.
HJB and Erich, I understand your point... as much as I dislike Stiney's performance as OC (and that's all this is about... I'm sure he's a good person), I'm not not gonna root for my Hokies to fail.
Yeah Bud - what's with rushing 3 guys on crucial 4th and long obvious passing downs...
Yes, I remember the first half. Also, let me reaffirm: Stinespring is not an Offensive Coordinator. He cannot call a game nor can he make adjustments. But sometimes a team just does not play well. Its not always due to bad coaching. We whipped Miami on the line of scrimmage. I did not hear screams from Miami fans that Mark Whipple is a terrible OC. Florida State's defense stinks to high heaven this year, yet they still have Mickey Andrews: a proven fine DC. Here are the facts: If we dont fumble on the second play, if Tyrod does not have such a bad first half, if Cody and Rock are not beaten for TDs, if the Refs dont call phantom holding and interference calls, we win comfortably and there would not be this outrage. Perhaps a better OC could have pulled out the win, but sometimes you lose because you make too many mistakes and dont play well.
mark, we're hearing you. you appear to be new to the site, at least on the commenting end.
the "outrage" is a building feeling. we're not *outraged* at the immense horrible-ness of *just* the UNC game. we're not outraged at *just* the GT game.
but it's sure as hell been building for 7-8 years. so, yes, fair or not, each badly called game, each game with zero adjustments, each game where he looks shellshocked in the booth, each game where the announcers and network makes fun of our play calling, each game where i predict over 80% of our play calls based purely on formation and down/distance, [would you like me to continue?]....
each game for all those reasons, it builds, and it builds. and it turns more and more outrageous. and more and more outrage causing. how does this bumblehead still have a job in major division 1 football? how?
now i'm not saying i could do a better job [we can debate that later], but i'm sure as hell saying there are people out there we could hire that definitely do a better job. and if beamer and company are 100% closed to even considering someone else.....then it's time to start talking blashpemy and ask for sweeping changes. to an entire staff that is devoted to winning. that is LOYAL to a winning program, not friends.
Mark,
While you are correct we did get our asses whooped in the trenches, especially our OL vs their DL, did you think that the main reason that happened was a poorly designed gameplan that was designed to fial before the first half? The gameplan Stiney designed for UNC was not designed to take advantage of and attack/exploit UNC's weaknesses. UNC has a great DL that is deep and great LBs. Knowing this, Stiney designed an offensive gameplan to try to block hat on a hat on these guys despite the fact our OL was banged up coming into the game, became more banged up throughout the game, and Stiney had to have a good feeling UNC would stack the box. Even though UNC had an advantage in their DL vs our OL, we tried a hat on a hat blocking anyways! How dumb is that? That is setting your players up for failure! Of course they are going to have problems executing! The gameplan was designed for failure! What should have been done gameplan wise to attack UNC's defense and get them back on their heels?? How about not allowing UNC's DL to just pin their ears back and rush Tyrod in the pocket or blitz because they know what is coming? Since our OL is undersized and more athletic, we SHOULD have taken advantage of UNC being overaggressive on defense and began pulling our center and guards on run plays and running traps. We should have used LOTS of misdirection plays like bootlegs, roll Tyrod out by design and screen passes where the flow of the play is to one side of the field and we screen back to the other side of the field. What would this accomplish? It would completely stop UNC's d from knowing what is coming next. We would stop being so predictable and UNC's defenders would have to sit back and try and diagnose the play first before they ran to the ball. If they know we use lots of misdirection, a defense cannot attack as much. They have to play more honest or a good offense will take advantage of the overpursuit and get big plays. We could have lined up in a run tendency formation, ran a playaction bootleg going against the flow of the play giving Tyrod a run/pass option where he can hit Boone for 5-10 yds on a pass or tuck it and run. This is basic offense 101. Stiney does not use any of this! Calling 5+ misdirections early in the game would have prevented UNC from knowing what play we were going to run next, it would have prevented UNC's d from attacking and forced them to stay at home and be patient and that extra time to read and diagnose the play is often the extra second or two necessary that decides whether a playcall works for positive yds or not. In conclusion, Stinespring put every one of his players and specifically his OL in a position to fail on Thurs night. It was not fair at all for Stiney to ask our OL to block UNC's DL hat on a hat and not employ the tools smarter OCs would do to play more to our OL's strengths. Our OL was asked to play to its weaknesses against more physically gifted opponents. Should we be surprised they got overmatched? Failing to plan, is planning to fail. Even when Stiney does design good gameplans and Thurs night was not one of them, that does not mean a lot once the game starts. College and professional football are all about adjustments. As usual with Stiney, it took him at least a half to adjust.
HokieJayBee,
I understand. I am as disappointed, angry, sad and frustrated as anyone.
