Partially, I wanted to see if I could get a unanimous response. And to be honest, I'm a little surprised that eight people say Bud Foster should not get a HCIW. But I'm assuming they might feel the same way I do about it.
Yes, indeed, the Illinois Hokie does not endorse a Head Coach in waiting agreement for Bud Foster. This, I should note, is not the official position of FBS, because the Hokie Guru is hardcore in favor of a Bud Foster HCIW arrangement. And to be honest, I can see why any Hokie would be. Let me explain.
I am opposed to HCIW deals in general. I think they're a bad idea. I think they inherently create some degree of strife in the program, not necessarily among the coaches (I think Bud would remain fiercely, unquestioningly loyal to Frank throughout the duration of the HCIW) but among the players. I also think that any position as prestigious as Division 1A head football coach should have a hiring process, if for no other reason to give minority candidates a fair shot of breaking into what so far is a lily-white club.
That being said, I want Bud Foster as our next head coach. He's earned it through years of devotion, dedication, and loyalty, not to mention his performance. I sincerely hope that Jim Weaver has already taken Bud aside and told him in no uncertain terms that he gets the first interview when Frank steps down, and that barring Jesus H. Christ applying for the job, it's pretty much a lock for the Lord of the Lunch Pail.
I also say make Bud Foster the highest paid assistant coach in college football. The man's earned it.
But an actual public announcement that Bud Foster's already been selected as the heir apparent to Beamerball? Not for me. I think it's unnecessary, for reasons I've laid out already, and others I won't bother taking up space with here. But please, if you disagree with me, please make your case in a response to this post. I'm all up for an open discussion on this.
Thanks for the many votes this week, and please remember to vote in the new poll!
