FBS Mission Statement:
We at FBS believe that offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring bears the largest share of the blame for years of sub-par output from some of the most talented players ever to set foot on Worsham Field. We believe the main objective of the VT football program - a national championship - will escape us as long as Stinespring is making the calls. We therefore advocate the improvement of our football program through the replacement of our offensive coordinator.

Open Thread - The Miami Game, The Hokie Offense, and Bud Foster Interview at Clemson (ARMAGEDDON!!).
The Hokie Guru is going to have a more extensive post this weekend. Lots of news here on Virginia Tech's collapse in Miami, the Hokies triple digit ranked offense (yep, that's below 100... maybe even below 110), and Bud Foster's interview at Clemson (ARMAGEDDON). In the mean time, give the Hokie Guru your thoughts.

4th quarter, down 2 points with less than 4 minutes to go. all you need is a field goal. You have a 3rd and 2, what do you do? hand it off to Pickle for a draw. the miami D wasnt expecting that at all. 4th down, too much pressure, get the 7 yard loss on a sack. game over.
do the team not realize that we were 3 points away from tampa, assuming we won out? we dont even deserve that right.
we cant even get into field goal range?? with running 6 offensive plays in the third quarter, i cant believe we scored the second touchdown, actually. i could live with going for it on 4th and 1 in the first quarter. i know it would have gave us more points, but we cant say that it would have been the difference in the game.
the smallish UMD D line made our o line look cohesive for once. give miami some props for their defense and atheletic qb play. i wish our qbs could throw the ball away!
and where was the tackling this game? at least we didnt have a special teams gaffe.
Bud Foster is sending his own message: Weaver/Beamer, least give my defensive players a chance to catch their breath on the sidelines for once. if you don't make a change with out offense, im outta here. however, its hard to bring change when stinespring just brought in a 5 star recruit and promised to play him as a freshman. ultimately, it is time for weaver to step in and ask brian to step down.
I can't think of any VT season that has showcased the stark differences in talent between our two coordinators.
Without Bud's defense we wouldn't even have a winning record. At BC the defense produced 14 points directly and put the offense on the doorstep and we still managed to lose. When we played BC last year if you were told we'd hold BC (top 3 at the time) to 14 points, would you think we could score at least 15? The list goes on and on. As if sucking on O wasn't enough, a top program is again considering him for a well deserved head coaching gig, so we'll probably lose Bud.
Then we have the dark side of the pigskin. We have players with talent but pathetic play calling that is downright bizzare and completely attention deficit disorder. I'm not sure he is watching the same game. What do think the players were thinking in the huddle when Stiney calls the 3 and 2 draw to Dustin Pickle? How about options with Sean? It's a tribute to them that they haven't turned on their coach.
During the Miami game it was plain to see that after an adequate first half offense performance, the Miami D adjusted. Stiney couldn't compensate for those adjustments. He just starts whipping through the play book and trying crazy crap.
Bud Foster went from player, to assistant to great coach. But Stinespring is NOT but Foster. I respect Beamer's loyalty to him and I'm sure Stinespring is a great person but he is not doing the job. He has to go.
If you don't think so, imagine Jimbo Fisher or Mike Leach as OC and Bud Foster as DC. How does that look? Beautiful.
Stinespring as OC? Expect struggling to win 8 games.
Every leader is responsible for their organization. Like Tommy Bowden did, Bryan needs man up, recognize his failure, do the right thing and resign.
Bryan Stinespring has some of the worst play calling I have ever seen. When rushing isn't working, he rushes. When Danny Coale and Evans are catching every pass and getting ~5 to 10 yards after catch, he stops throwing to them. Our two touchdowns came from improvisation from Tyrod Taylor. The bottom line is Stinespring cannot score any points with the ball, two yards to rush, and three minutes left on the clock. That alone should be the nail is his coffin.
Tyrod mentioned after the game that he did 'not have enough time.' There were three minutes on the clock, bud, so you had more than enough time. Right now I have a real love/hate relationship with Tyrod. Oh and thanks for the excessive celebration you @**hole.
A large majority of our problems stem from the fact that our offensive line is TERRIBLE. Stop recruiting two-star linemen and tight ends (that you convert to linemen) if you want to run the ball. The running back isn't solely responsible for the play; that responsibility is in the hands of the offensive line and Stinespring.
I am actually glad we suck this year so maybe Stinespring and Beamer will resign. I like Beamer like everyone else, but his lack of caring anymore has me worried. I feel as though he is making his money so it doesn't really matter to him whether we win or lose. He made a terrible decision starting Glennon this season (on a side note I cannot wait until Glennon graduates so we don't have the "dual" QB crap anymore), and then quickly reversed his decision. He is out of touch with his own program. Look at this quote from the game: “But I’m proud of our football team. I thought our defense kept battling and on offense, we never gave in. We drove down and got a score and got the ball back, with a chance to win it that last series." On offense, Tyrod kept battling while Stinespring LOST THE GAME (e.g. Dustin Pickle)! We would often give in on defense when players would consider the play over and stop hustling, missing important tackles.
I seriously doubt Foster's head coaching experience, but I feel as though maybe we should offer him the position at Virginia Tech so we don't play an even better defense he creates at Clemson. Think about losing to Clemson with Bud Foster at the spear of the attack. Without Foster, our program disappears. I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but our defense is the only way we win games (e.g. last night we held them to field goals and three and out multiple times, only to go three and out ourselves on offense).
I am disgusted with our football program at this time.
Oh and Dyrell Roberts should just be kicked off the team. People say 'oh these kids are freshmen.' Did they play/catch footballs in high school? That was almost a perfect throw(a bit under thrown), but he dropped it.
Boykin is almost in the same boat, but he had the ridiculous catch that netted...oh wait our offense couldn't make anything out of it because we are terrible.
I also believe a lot of the blame lies with Sunshine AKA Brent Bowden. He couldn't punt the ball well all night, which consistently gave the Hurricanes good field position.
I wish I knew how to start my blog..but I am so frustrated I have no clue where to begin. If the day VT beat Texas in the Sugar Bowl is considered one of the greatest days in VT Football history; I believe today could be one of the worst. I guess I am so frustrated because I look at a program that has risen to be a National Power over the past two decades under a head coach that has build an amazing reputation amongst college football faithful. Now, all that he has worked for, all that the school has accomplished and not only his, but the VT football legacy is in serious trouble; and the blame hinges on one person - Bryan Stinespring. I guess I could go on for hours about his power game-plan, his game sense, his lack of knowledge, control of the clock...etc. But why waste anymore all of your precious time. We all are well aware of the countless and numerious mistakes Stinespring has brought to our offense;over the past 7 years. It is just a sad day for myself, two of my best friends (#17 and #10) and thousands of other Hokie fans. My fear (as well as many of yours I am sure) is where is this programming going? My fear is this is the beginning of the end for our great run. Beamer has brought this on himself by sticking with an Offensive Coordinator for reasons unknown to the college football nation. And the hiring of Newsome as the O-line coach did not help matters. What is going to happen to recruiting, how about the young players moral, is the Hokie nation going to lose faith? My heart is hoping that the fallout about to hit Blacksburg is short and painless; but my gut tells me otherwise. To Coach Beamer - your future and legacy are in your own hands at this very moment. And to the Weaver administration; your greatest source of revenue is about to take a hit that you may never recover from.
I cannot believe that with 2 games remaining and a possible bowl game I am more interested in what Greenburg is putting together on the hardwood.
It's not news to anyone that Stinespring is a worthless excuse for an offensive coordinator. But I don't know if everyone knows just how terrible he is. So let's take a look.
The year is 2006. Virginia Tech has a young QB in Sean Glennon. The WRs are somewhat young but also talented, and three will go on to play in the NFL. With a very good Junior RB the talent is there, albeit somewhat inexperienced. The defense is coached by Bud Foster and loaded. We have solid returners on special teams and it appears that everything is going to really come together for the Hokies this year.
The year is 2006, and Virginia Tech finishes with the 99th best offense in 1-A football. There are 119 teams. The passing and rushing offense are an anemic 85 and 82 respectively. Again, out of 119 teams. The defense is the best in the country, but it isn't enough to carry the offense. The team somehow manages to lose two games in a watered down schedule and doesn't even make the ACC title game, which is unheard of for a #1 defense.
The year is 2007. Virginia Tech has a returning starting QB in Sean Glennon and a true freshman hyped up QB in Tyrod Taylor. We also have three WRs who would go on to be drafted, and a receiving threat at TE in Greg Boone. The RB has even received some hype as a potential dark horse candidate for the Heisman. All of this bodes well for the offense. To top it off the defense is still coached by Bud Foster and still loaded. We have solid returners on special teams and it appears that everything is going to really come together for the Hokies this year.
The year is 2007, and Virginia Tech finishes with the 100th best offense in 1-A football. Same story, same singer, same tune. The passing and rushing offense are an anemic 85 and 82 respectively. Again, out of 119 teams. The defense does all it can, finishing in the top 5 in every major category except pass defense, where they finished in the 30s, but it isn't enough to carry the offense. A potential national championship season is swept away as the inept Virginia Tech offense stumbles into a loss against BC, at home, on a Thursday night.
Now, the year is 2008. Virginia Tech has a returning starting Sr. QB in Sean Glennon, and an more experienced sophomore QB that has never lost a game in Tyrod Taylor. The WR corps are depleted due to poor roster management and injuries, and we are forced to start freshman RBs due to poor character assessment at various levels of recruiting. Still, the defense is good, and the RBs show promise. And even with a young team, the ACC is very down this year and as long as we can manage not to lose 3 games in conference we should be in the championship game. It's a reasonable goal considering our talent.
It's still 2008. And now Virginia Tech's offense has slipped to 109th. The passing offense is 113th, 7th worst in the country. Not a single WR has caught a touchdown pass. The defense is doing what it can, still in the top 20, but the weight of the flailing offense is too much to bear. The season starts, just like the season prior, with a Sean Glennon interception. It would take losses to Boston College, FSU and Miami, only during one of which did Virginia Tech score more than 20 points, to dash the teams hopes of a conference championship, but they would be dashed. Let's look ahead.
It's 2009. Taylor is given the solid starting job and does admirably. The RBs are more experienced and more effective. Unfortunately, the bulk of our offensive production relies on Taylor breaking the pocket on designed passing plays, leading to nagging leg injuries that will follow him his entire career. When he's out an inexperienced backup must come in and the defense can put 8 or even 9 in the box, shutting down the running game. The offense finishes the season ranked somewhere in the 80s. The defense returns to it's former glory with a top 10 or even top 5 showing, but it's not enough. The Hokies may get another 10 win season, but it's bittersweet when Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster finally gets his break as a Head Coach elsewhere. Constantly frustrated by the offense constantly dragging the team down and knowing that if his defense had been paired with even an average offense he'd likely have a National Title ring on his finger, he parts ways with Virginia Tech.
It's 2010. Taylor is still the starter, but only plays about 3/4s of the snaps due to nagging injuries. At least one WR had left after the previous year, knowing that his stock wasn't going to go up any more. The offense is, more or less, the same as it was in 2007. Talent talent everywhere but not a point on the board, mostly due to bad play calling. To compound the problem the defense, though still talented, has begun to slip with Foster's absence. The incoming freshmen are noticeably less talented, but the full effects of that won't be felt for another year or so. The team manages to win some games but probably not the ACC championship, and is no longer even mentioned in the National Title conversation.
2011, it's clear that the team has fallen. Hard. Some defensive players leave early and there is nobody ready to take their place. Evans leaves early and the new QB can't handle the load on his own. Still terrible playcalling, still terrible personnel decisions, the only difference is that now the defense isn't there to pick up the slack. We are no longer considered a real threat to win the conference, and we've effectively traded places with the 2006 UNC team in the power structure of the ACC. We've become a case study of what happens when you hold on to an old coach who refuses to make necessary decisions.
This is the warning I'm giving Frank Beamer and Virginia Tech football. This is your future. Barring an actual second coming of Michael Vick, which Taylor is not, our offense is never going to be enough to actually win ball games under Steinspring. He is a terrible offensive coordinator, and it doesn't matter how well her recruits if once those great recruits get here he turns them into a bottom 20 offense. Yeah, this was long. But seriously, Steinspring is that bad. And if we've got to get rid of Beamer to get rid of Steinspring, well, after this year I'm not so sure it's that big of a loss.
Eric I could not agree with you more. Well said. While it takes everyone on a team to bring an organization to its peak; it only takes one to bring an organization to it lowest point. We have that person in Blacksburg and his name is Bryan Stinespring. I also agree with you comments on Beamer; if he does not want to make the change then someone must make it for him. And if it requires him going to the house…then so be it.
There is an old saying in the military that you spend 95% of your time dealing with the 5% of your team members that are non-contributors to success (aka problem children). This is true in life and exactly what is happening in Blacksburg is a prime example. Congrats Stinespring…you are that 5%. It is no wonder that Foster is leaving, his shoulders must be tired from carrying the weight of the entire program for so long.
Beamer stop wasting 95% of your time on the bottom 5%....eliminate that problem. Get someone as OC that has actually played football and get back on track.
And to the Athletic Department: Wake up and name Foster Head Coach in Waiting this afternoon.
The numbers don't lie, it's really as simple as that small fact. Our offense is ranked over 100 in the country for the second consecutive year. Considering that three members of the 2007 offense are now making a significant impact on NFL teams is a strong statement to their ability and Tech's lack of coaching.
I have watched every down of every game and attended the BC game; I know what the play call will be just like the opponent's defensive coordinator. Even Craig James (ESPN anchor)last night was calling out Stinespring, so it's not just loyal Tech fans that are witnessing our coaching staff's pathetic performance.
If Foster leaves we'll be celebrating winning seasons instead of conference championships. Beamer needs to dial up a gun-slinger like the O.C. at Tulsa or Appalachain State's signal caller. Since Beamer is so loyal to his coaching staff he should make Stinespring the head recruiter and relinquish him of his coaching duties.
We made him a picture http://www.dictailgate.com/wordpress/index.php
I'll quote Einstein one more time ,
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. "
Weaver will do nothing he is so old he is out of it too. We need young energetic people to take over so we can finally put something in that empty BSC Trophy case..
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmkay. After the elation that was the Maryland game, we all came crashing back down to earth this week, as we all got reminded that yes, indeed, Bryan Stinespring does indeed suck monkey balls.
Perhaps the best criticism of Bryan Stinespring's playcalling philosophy comes not from the HG but from Frank Beamer himself.
"For a while now, assistant coach Bryan Stinespring had been bugging offensive coordinator Rickey Bustle to let him call a play during the game.
"We had just had a series where we ran it something like 13 consecutive times. We had hammered it down he field and were getting ready to score.
"Rickey then clicked over to Bryan and asked him what he wanted to do. Pittsburgh had stacked the line so Bryan said, 'I think we should throw it.'
"Well, we had 500 yards rushing that day. I got on the headset and screamed, 'We just drove down the field running the ball at will, and you want to THROW it?'
All I heard was a click. It was the sound of Bryan turning off his microphone. I don't think he tried calling a play for two years after that."
From Turn Up The Wick, pp. 137-138.
Beamer knew back in the day that Stinespring had little promise when it came to calling plays. He has this tendency to go against what's working due to some insane tendency (ADHD is a good analogy, firetheoc) to not stick with what's working for fear of it being stopped. He doesn't understand the basic principle that you stick with what's working until the opponent stops it.
That's why it sort of shocks me that Stinespring stuck with Evans running the ball against MD. Remember the Orange Bowl? (Who could forget, right?) Ore was on pace to have a huge night, and Stinespring abandons the run. Typical.
So, anyhoo, Foster's gonna bolt for an in-conference school. And who can blame him? Clemson is a HUGE opportunity for him, and I seriously hope he wins national championships there.
But for God's sake can Beamer finally just admit the opportunity lost over the past four seasons due to an inability of the offensive coordinator (not the offensive talent) to produce? I know he's loyal to his staff to no end, and that in part is what's built us into what we are. But if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's horrible offensive coordinator. We should have won the national championship in '04, repeated in '05, and should have won it again in '07. We would have at least one national championship in the past four years with Rickey Bustle as our OC. I'd give 10-1 odds on it. With a great OC, we'd have won two or three.
Now, if Foster heads for greener pastures, we're essentially doomed. Beamer will not win a national championship without Foster. Period. With Foster gone and Stinespring calling the offense, within three years we might be longing for the days when we were 6-4 after ten games.
Bryan Stinespring is truly horrible. On 3rd and 2, needing only a field goal to win, with good field position - he runs Dustin Pickle? Nothing against Mr. Pickle, but give me a break. You're starting RB had 250 yards the week before. You have a superior athlete in Tyrod Taylor and we use Dustin Pickle. Stinespring is inept in his play calling. It's so predictable that I can sit on my couch and know 70% of the plays before they happen. Imagine what a halfway decent D Coordinator would do.
To me it says it all that Eddie Royal was medicore at VT. However, with the Broncos he's a top tier WR - AS A ROOKIE. If Stinespring couldn't get it done with that talent, he never ever is.
Stinespring will be the down fail of VT. Bud Foster will leave because of him. And when that happens, VT can kiss their sucess goodbye. Bud is more important to VT football then Beamer.
Frank do all the loyal supporters and fans a favor - FIRE STINESPRING before it's too late.
what is up Frank Beamer and Jim Weaver? Your loyal to Bryan Stinespring huh?
Loyality is wonderful! But when will you start being loyal to the people who count......THE FANS!?
We are the ones who pay the bills. Not you. We are the loyal traveling fan base that sold the ACC on VT. We are the ones who spend the dollars that make the bowl scouts grin from ear to ear. We are the ones that made the stadium expansion possible. Not you. We are the ones who gladly pay ever higher, higher, and higher ticket, parking, and food/drink prices to support VT.
I have seen every single game in Lane since I was 3. I am now 34. I have seen ticket prices more than triple and hokie club membership become REQUIRED to get a decent seating location. And back in the day you could get 3 drinks for what you now charge for 1.
I you need to understand that being loyal is great but you have forgotten THE FANS who got you to this point.
Where is your loyality to THE FANS?
Bryan Stinespring is a JOKE. He is a joke for all the reasons many football smart Hokies seem to know. Are you blind or simply apathetic?
I firmly beleive that you get what you pay for. YOU ARE NOT DELIVERING AN ACCEPTABLE PRODUCT FOR THE PRICE. If you expect top dollar I expect a product worth of the price.
FIRE BRYAN STINESPRING!

Those are thew email addresses I could dig up tonight. Weaver, Bud foster, Billy hite, and T. Gray.
I know you all care as much as I do PLEASE give this info to EVERYONE that you know and ask them to voice their opinion. No joke tell EVERYONE.
We can crush VT with Anti- Stinespring honesty if we try!!
Remember......An opinion is NOTHING without a voice.
Thanks, because THE FANS are in charge. We need to organize.
If there is anything more that you think we can do get Stinespring fired. Please email me: sblatitude@yahoo.com.
P.S. I will be in section 16 row rrr wearing a FIRE STINESPRING t-shirt.
lets organize....The USA became free because of a smaller group then us :-)
dollardave, I like the enthusiasm... but calm down just a tiny bit... the Hokie Guru's blog got picked up by the Nebraska State Paper and will get picked up by others... if you can spread the word about my blog on your favorite Hokie sites, sports chat rooms, etc. stuff will happen...
@ dollardave,
I want one of those t-shirts too, problem is I can't order myself cuz the min is 10 and that's too expensive for me. Maybe a bunch of us can chip in and get some?
If I had the money, I'd get a box or two and give them out in front of Lane..
45 t-shirts at uberprints.com cost 456.30 or 10.14 per t-shirt
Here's what the Hokie Guru needs help with: How can I get some kind of Lane Stadium background or something else to make this blog more visually appealing? I'm a novice at that kind of stuff.
hey hokie guru,
I love you bro! Thank you for the opportunity to voice our opinions on your blog. My girlfriend is already wearing the fire Stinespring T-shirt.
My lack of extra time and effort led me to post my mail. However, I'd love to join forces with you. You are the FIRST person to actually DO something about stinespring.
I think that you agree that we need to organize and I know that is what this blog is all about. You deserve credit for being the FIRST. I love that baby.
I fell like you are the brains and I am the voice. I actually had an official visit as a recruited walk on and played for my beloved Hokies. (With photos to prove it). Frank Beamer cannot dispute that fact.
We both agree Stinespring is a JOKE. I agree with your passion and the blog. While I do not know how to get in touch with you. I promise to focus all my efforts on your origional goal to FIRE STINESPRING. To promote this blog.
To Everyone I am willing to front the FIRE STINESPRING cash for 15-30tshirts by eleven west in Fairlawn, Va. (with confirmed buyers)If you have a better pice please let me know....I will front the money for the cause. (I am in lot 7 if you want to meet before the game). Ok? If we order thousands we can pay much less. Obviously. But that may my too late for football season, Yet in time, for basketball season. While I Love Greenberg.
The USA became free because of a smaller group then us :-)
Fire Bryan Stinespring!
Join this blog!!!
Dollar Dave
mainaman, You are just like me. Thank you bro for supporting this blog.
I am far from wealthy. However, because of the response from this blog I will print 15 tshirts even if there is not enough orders. I don't own any interest at all in any tshirt business. I Simply want to get Stinespring fired! And to promote this blog.
Hell, If anyone wants to join me let me know. OK? If we are lucky we can get media attention outside of Lane. However, I am checking into the laws.
FIRE STINESPRING, GIVE BUD FOSTER HIS RESPECT, AND PROMOTE THIS BLOG.
The USA became free because of a smaller group then us :-)
Voice Hokie Pride...or refuse to pay for less!
DollarDave
dollardave,
I am interested in paying for a t-shirt, I am just a grad student with family, that's why I can't afford to buy a bunch to hand to ppl. If there is interest from more ppl I definitely want one.
I am sure many ppl will want one when they see us @ Lane, with those
there is nothing i can really say. he's shit but he's frank's shit. even if frank doesn't go wild w/a new fangled spread O, he has to be able to get a better developer of talent, better game planner and a better game caller. until he does, more heartbreak and annoyance.
I just sent up an e-mail address for this blog... it is on my profile.
Dollardave, how much is the t-shirt? I will be at the UVa game (the game after Thanksgiving).
All of you guys have had some excellent comments on this open thread... good work... I think a few might get their own post.
why are we only talking about the OC? What about Beamer himself? Fact1: his record against to 10 teams is dismal. Fact2: His Beamer Ball crap is his way of getting away with no offense. Fact 3: He coaches not to lose instead of coaching to win. Fact4: his recruting sucks and this years poor WR status is no natural disasture. It happened because of lack of planning. I say Give Foster the head coach jod and let him get his own coaching staff.
Unfortunately, there are more problems on the offensive coaching staff than just Stiney. I still want Stiney gone, but why stop there? We should also get rid of O'Cain and Hite. They are also dead weight. They interfere with the playcalling and neither of them is good at recruiting.
good point on o'cain. previous stops along the way were happy to be rid of him. hite is frank's best buddy and a good rb coach and does a lot of org stuff for frank.
my biggest beef with him was letting ore play last year when he should not have. why? cause cheeseman was in hite's dog house. are you effing kidding me, there is no way he half as bad as ore. ore was late, skipped classes, didn't work out and cheese was never given a true shot. i don't understand, everyone knows it took ore 8 games to look even close to the '06 version.
you know if tech had to shit can the whole offensive staff to get a new, very good OC and his staff in, so be it. sure it would hurt in recruiting a bit with stiney, but a good O would recruit it's self in a yr or 2.
hokiej88, are you MENTAL?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Get rid of Billy Hite? You have GOT to be kidding me! He is the BEST offensive coach we have. The one thing we invariably have is a good running back. Hite has been solid for us for the last 20 years. He's one of the best running back coaches in the country, IMO. We have to keep Hite, regardless of what he wants for salary.
Now O'Cain and Newsome...different story. O'Cain is out of touch. He longs for the days of traditional, drop back QBs, because it's all he knows how to coach. He picked Glennon over Cory Holt and Ike Whitaker. What does that tell you?
Curt Newsome is also an abject failure. He's had three years now, and produced not one solid O-line. And it is NOT lack of talent. He's gotten 3 and 4 star talent (and even 5 star talent in BDC). He just doesn't know how to coach the position. And y'know, it's not really his fault. He's NEVER coached the position before coming to Tech. Who the hell hired this guy?
But, seriously, what in the holy name of Wes Worsham inspired you to call for Hite's job? He's the ONE guy on the offensive staff who knows what he's doing.
momadi, thou shalt NOT sully the name of Beamer with your blasphemy. I rebuke thee, infidel.
I'm not mental and I would appreciate it if you would not call people names to make your point. It is a fact that Billy Hite is not a very good recruiter. He has gotten a free pass for a long time from Frank. Billy Hite has also been interfering with the playcalling. Billy Hite is in charge of the goal line and red zone offense while O'Cain is in charge of the 2 min hurryup offense at the end of each half. They meet with Stiney and prepare the gameplans for those situations and then they make the calls. Also, ho do you explain Pickle playing with the game on the line on Thurs night and our best RB not on the field when we need 2 yds?? Evans should have been in there. Hite has shown that he often does not play the best player. He played a senior Imoh in 2005 when Ore was clearly better and he stuck with Ore last yr when it was clear Cheese was better and Ore was dogging it for most of the season/out of shape. This yr he started KLJr over Evans until KLJr got hurt. JO was our best RB in the spring game and during the summer and yet he has been given only a carry or two a game to prove himself when Hite gives interviews to the media saying JO is going to get more touches? I don't know about you, but I'd rather have Chris Beatty as our RB coach over Hite anyday! Beatty can recruit as good as anyone and he can coach.
Illinois Hokie....
I am tired of blind loyalty. Beamer can make you a top 15 team on average but he CANNOT make you a top 5 team. He has had almost 20 years to do it and he has not delivered yet. Show me one National Title? I am also tired of going to Bowl games only to lose them. This is what distinguishes a great coach from a good coach, wining big games, bowl games, consistency with recruiting. The only year we had a shot at the national title is when we had arguably the best college football player ever. Do we need to wait for the next one? NO.
hokiej88, first of all, chill. If me calling you mental on a blog rubs you the wrong way...well, fair enough. It was all in fun. Fun is that thing that went into hiding when the PC movement started (don't mean personal computer).
Oxendine, Stith, Suggs, Jones, Humes, Imoh. The defense of William Hite rests. Ore could have been the next great Hokie running back, but he had an attitude and commitment problem. He was given the '06 season to prove himself, failed to do so, and was shown the door. Now we have Darren Evans getting into groove and Ryan Williams waiting in the wings.
Hite isn't our best recruiter. True. He's sort of the anti-Stinespring: a very good coach who isn't great at recruiting. Not every coach has to be a top-notch recruiter, though. Recruiting the talent hasn't been our problem. Utilizing it has been.
Truth is, as I see it, our problem isn't running backs. Our o-line has become a joke under Newsome.
momadi, your argument seems convincing. I, too, have considered the possibility that Beamer will not be the coach to get us over the hump. However, what Beamer did do is take a perennial .500 team with aspirations of the Liberty Bowl and put them into a position to make a run for the national championship every year. And contrary to popular opinion, that elevation occurred during the 1995 season, not the '99 affair. Coaching us to a win in the Sugar Bowl set the table for us to even have a shot to play for it all in '99. Without that win in '95, an undefeated season in '99 would have given us a conciliatory BCS bowl, but not a sniff of the national title. We would have been Boise State.
What Beamer has done was perhaps best represented in the preseason projections this year, when VT was chosen as the favorite to win the ACC when all evidence pointed to a painful rebuilding year. Beamer has coached Virginia Tech into something that no previous head coach ever managed: national respect.
Virginia Tech football is the House That Frank Built. He might not get us to the pinnacle, just as Moses wasn't allowed to enter the promised land. But when we finally do fill that damn empty trophy case in the athletics center, regardless of who coaches us in the championship game it will be in large part because of what Frank Beamer did for Virginia Tech football.
If VT does not have all or nearly all of its assistant coaches recruiting well, then we will never get to the level most of us fans want. It is that simple. All of the other top programs each have all of their assistant coaches on the staff recruit well. There are coaches on our staff who barely recruit at all or who do not do a good job of it (as in strikeout more times than avg on recruits). These coaches are older, happier and more complacent than our younger ones. They also are both really good friends with Beamer and would probably never be fired even if they were doing the worst possible job. One of them, O'Cain, was the only candidate interviewed for our QB coach position when Kevin Rogers left to go to the Vikings. Other younger, talented and up and coming candidates who were interested in the job weren't even allowed to interview bcause Beamer had his mind madeup before the process started. Beamer keeping O'Cain, Hite and Stiney on staff is croneyism because if Beamer evaluated their present and recent past (last few seasons only) performances objectively, they would all be gone... Oh and you have no defense for Hite deciding to play Pickle on that key 3rd down play huh?? That's because Hite himself has no defense for it. What are we doing handing off the ball to our 4th string RB with the game and a spot in the ACCCG on the line? We had a timeout. Should have put Evans back in the game if we were gonna run and that is 100% Hite's decision on which back to play. All I am saying is that Hite was once a great coach and probably a great recruiter but I don't think he is either anymore. Hite plays favorites with his RBs and does not play the best player talent wise anymore. Hite started KLJr each game before he got hurt and wasted a good amount of carries each game running him in between the tackles, which btw is not KLJr's strength, not because he was our best RB, but because Hite "liked him." How can you justify that kind of behavior as a coach?? It should be about putting each player in the best possible position to maximize his abilities and also that of the team. Hite does not do that anymore in my humble opinion. Hite has his own agenda....
I think Beamer took us to a whole new level but I am not sure he can go any further. That's all I am saying.
We all feel the stupidity of offensive play calling during the games. Frustrated beyond belief, let us remember that Stinespring's short-thought plays ultimately result in a bunch of recruits that are left less than impressed w/ our program. Sure, while Bud is in Blacksburg, defensive players will continue to believe in their ability to develop and showcase their talent on a national stage. But w/ Stinespring at the helm, running the same plays against every team (as if all teams were created equal), our quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, receivers and even offensive lineman will continue to look under-developed.
I ultimately cannot believe he chose to run b/t the tackles on first and second down w/ Evans just b/c of his all-star performance vs. the Terps. Forcing us into a 3rd and long w/ Glennon......what do you think a defense would do? Of course, blitz until he can prove them wrong. We do have freshman wide-outs, but they are very talented. Why not try them out before a must-made play?
The bottom line is this: We have been executing the same offensive game plan against every team....failing in every way to prepare for our unique opponent's strengths and weaknesses. The Kansas game last year was the worst display of this and it is time for the expectations of the fans, school, players and recruits to be respected w/ a replacement at offensive coordinator.
I'm obviously late to this blog as I read many other comments going deeper than my last post.
I'm joyous, btw, that this blog exists. After the Kansas game, I looked for such a site, because I was sure it existed, but was left disappointed.
Alright....a quick thought on expectations. For those that don't know (and maybe many of you do...b/c I graduated before many back in 2000), there is now a reserved spot in the Hokie Hall of Fame, Michael Vick Hall...whatever....for the national championship trophy. When I escorted myself thru back in '05, I thought "this is great....we're not ashamed about making public what are expectations really are."
Now, it almost makes me sick. To see such a display and yet such a comfortableness w/ mediocrity on the part of Beamer & his staff. It's unfortunate, but I do believe pressure from fans such as the ones on this blog, help reluctant coaches come to decision points faster. They don't want to b/c of personal ties (which in every sense should have professional limits), and if the pressure wasn't there, they probably wouldn't. Keep applying the pressure. Beamer is better than this. He needs a better staff, and quite frankly, I think he's stopped challenging himself.
Christopher, the Hokie Guru here started this site the same day as the Kansas game. 1/3/08 to be exact :-)
Well I think my blog post at joshuadelung.blogspot.com today sort of echoes everyone's sentiments on this site, every other blog and forum I read, everyone I talk to, the media, etc.
Hokiej88, when it all boils down, Hite does his job. He turns out high quality running backs on a consistent basis. He may not be the best recruiter, but if we followed your suggestion we'd throw the baby out with the bathwater and shoot ourselves in the foot. It's obvious you have no experience putting a football coaching staff together. You're an all or nothing kind of guy.
As for Pickle getting that carry, Pickle has been our 2-minute drill tailback all year. If you think that's a bad decision, fair enough, but have the cojones and the foresight to say something about it before a blown 3rd down play in the tenth game of the season. Either you didn't have anything to say about it until now, which makes you reactionary, or you didn't know Pickle was our 2-minute back, which makes you ignorant I didn't reply to this assertion of yours not because I lack an answer, but because I think the statement itself doesn't merit one.
Did you ever think, also, that perhaps when Hite says he "likes" KLJ, that might mean he thinks he's the better back, not that he wants to share a milkshake with two straws with the guy? I "like" Tyrod more than Glennon, and by that I mean I think Tyrod has better upside as a QB. But we're going to have to agree to disagree here. I really like Hite. I think he's been an asset to VT, and continues to be one. I say keep him.
When it comes to O'Cain, you and I are in complete agreement. Bad hire, narrow-minded on Beamer's part. He only knows how to coach pro-style QBs. I also have a sneaking suspicion that there might have been some racial issues involved in O'Cain's decision to start Glennon over Holt or Whitaker. Holt or Whitaker would have been better suited to keep the offensive scheme similar to what it had been with Marcus Vick under center. Switching to a drop-back passers like Glennon put the whole offense in a sling, because the whole philosophy of the offense (what little Stinespring has) had to be fundamentally altered. I can understand the mentality behind hiring O'Cain - Beamer had just been burned by Kevin Rogers, who bolted after a couple of years. He wanted someone he felt he could trust, who he knew would be around. Unfortunately Beamer made the mistake of sacrificing quality for loyalty. And we all have suffered because of it.
I found a petition to have Stinespring replaced. There's strength in numbers so I thought it might be appreciated here.
